Mammut Aenergy 18 Backpack

A light 380 g, 18 L pack that expands to 20 L with its roll-top opening

This is an 18 L, 380 g backpack that puts an emphasis on light weight. It works for speed hiking, which means walking in the mountains at a fast pace, as well as for everyday outings. It closes by rolling the upper part, and this lets you expand the capacity up to 20 L.

Features

• The capacity is 18 L and it weighs 380 g. Actual dimensions are about 22.5 cm wide, 45 cm high, and 10 cm deep.
• The roll-top closure, which is rolled shut at the upper end, lets you expand the capacity from 18 L to 20 L.
• The wide shoulder straps use a material that lets air through easily, and the back pad is designed to be less bulky.
• The main compartment has a sleeve for a hydration bladder (a bag for carrying drinking water). There are also a large mesh pocket and two chest pockets.
• It has a PFC-free (perfluorinated chemicals) durable water repellent (DWR) finish and is made mainly from recycled materials. Reflective material is also used in the details.

Recommended for

• Those who put light weight first and want to walk at a fast pace
• Those who want a single pack for both hiking and everyday outings
• Those who want a backpack with chest pockets and other places to keep small items separate

Pros and things to consider

Pros

• At 380 g, it is well below the median weight (710 g) of the Mammut backpacks we carry.
• On days when you have more to carry, the roll-top opening lets you expand the capacity to 20 L.
• Two chest pockets and a large mesh pocket let you carry small items separately.

Things to consider

• No rain cover is included, so you need to prepare something separate for rainy days.
• At 18 L (20 L when expanded), the capacity is not enough for overnight mountain trips.
• Because it is built with light weight in mind, it is not suited to carrying a lot of heavy gear.
